Did you see a twitter or Facebook logo at the bottom of the screen while watching CNN?  Did you see a recent commercial or advertisement with just the Facebook business page listed for your favorite brand?   No website…  just the Facebook website.

People are reading so much about Twitter and how essential it is for business, that they are signing up without even understanding why or how to use it.  When I speak about Social Media, I always ask how many people have a twitter account.  Usually 25% of the hands go up in the room.  Next, I ask, “How many of you have absolutely no idea what to do with you account?” and most hands stay up.

The promise of massive Twitter followers and instant money making opportunities seem to be what’s promised almost everywhere I look.  But the surprising thing to me is that if so many people are offering these things, then many people must be interested.  The thing that concerns me the most about this new phenomenon is that I’ve recently seen some of my friends/colleagues (new to twitter) retweeting what they see as innocent offers to gain twitter followers.  Last week, I tweeted the following and had several folks respond and retweet wondering about the same thing:
