social-media-kool-aidFirst let me say social media networks like Twitter and Facebook are a must use marketing tool for most businesses.  What I mean by social media Kool-Aid is the common pattern for new social media users.  I typically see two types of common patterns or Kool-Aid drinkers out of the business community when applying social media.

by Angie A. Swartz on September 20, 2010

In case you missed it, here is the guest post I wrote for the popular Chicago blog SpinSucks in early September (A Big Thanks to Gini Dietrich and Daniel Hindin for having me!).  I wanted to repost it here in it’s entirety because of how important this topic is.  If you are relying too heavily on Facebook for your marketing strategy, you might reconsider. I look forward to your feedback on this post and would love to hear how you are integrating Facebook into your overall social media strategies.

Social Media Tip: Use Facebook Pages for Business

by Green Apple on September 14, 2010

Think you know everything there is to know about Facebook? Maybe you do! But did you know this social media tip?

A person can have only one personal Facebook account but unlimited business pages?

LIke us on FBFacebook regulations require that each person have only one account that is listed in a personal name (not in the name of a business).  However, you can add Facebook “pages” for most businesses in addition to your personal page.  A facebook page functions much like your personal page.

Facebook calls this feature “pages”.

The Biggest Social Media Myth

by Lemon Drop on September 10, 2010

Social media has created a competition of artificial relationships and in doing so created the impression that having more contacts, followers, or friends on a social media network means that person has more influence. Makes sense right? I once met a witty man with a shirt stating, “Facebook Friends: 500, Real Friends: 2.” Once you stop laughing, I should draw your attention to the fact that this actually matters for business. Watch this week’s Social Media Minute as Alan Underkofler explores this social media myth a bit further:

So dedicated followers of the Social Media Minute remember these two things:

Social Media MADE “The Guild” Succeed!

by Lemon Drop on August 24, 2010

This year at the famous San Diego Comic-Con I was given a mission to seek out Felica Day and the other cast members of “The Guild.” Admittedly, I had no idea what the show was about or why it was important until I got to the booth. As it turns out, I’ve been missing out! “The Guild” is especially interesting because the show is an online Felica Day, Creater and Main Character of The Guildseries!

Last week Facebook announced a new addition to the number one social networking website called Places.  Places allows Facebook users with a smart phone to “check in” where they are at in real time.  If you are sitting in your favorite restaurant, going to a show, or just strolling on your favorite path by the beach you can now check in using facebook places on iphonefacebook places.

Yes I did say using Facebook for business!  Many times when I am speaking in front of a group about Social Media for business or providing Social Media consulting services to one of our clients and Facebook comes up I often get a blank stare.  It seems many business owners do not understand how they can receive referrals, new customers, and new business from facebook.

Facebook is the #1 website online.  More people are on Facebook then any other website, it’s where people are spending time.  As a business owner you want to position yourself and your business where people spend their time.  This makes Facebook a very important tool which could generate a huge amount of referrals for you and your business.
