The Biggest Social Media Myth

by Lemon Drop on September 10, 2010

Social media has created a competition of artificial relationships and in doing so created the impression that having more contacts, followers, or friends on a social media network means that person has more influence. Makes sense right? I once met a witty man with a shirt stating, “Facebook Friends: 500, Real Friends: 2.” Once you stop laughing, I should draw your attention to the fact that this actually matters for business. Watch this week’s Social Media Minute as Alan Underkofler explores this social media myth a bit further:

So dedicated followers of the Social Media Minute remember these two things:

  1. More followers does not mean greater influence. What matters is quality connections and active correspondence.

  2. Make sure that you too search for and become a follower of people and things that you are interested in and want to be known for.

Engagement is the key to conversation, relationship and learning – not inflating the numbers listed on your profile. As Alan points out, it’s all about quality vs. quantity. Even those with thousands of followers on Twitter will tell you that the majority of their interactions occur with a much smaller number of people, usually less than 200.

I have many followers who only “follow” to attract attention to their services, products so that I actually follow them afterwards!
Following someone is a technique to get yourself followed :)

@globalpatriot I completely agree with you Global Patriot quality vs. quantity another thought is does the quantity increase the potential opportunity for you or your business on twitter?

@socialmediaresearch Yes many people follow me to get my attention or the attention of my followers. In fact your comment is very similar… Instead of leaving your name you left your key phase in order to create a link to your site or pull readers to your website. In social media you have to balance your engagement with both giving and self serving actions.
